NSA Wife Sarah Helm Probed Over Palestine Action Support
· World · The Independent, Telegraph India
Sarah Helm, wife of Prime Minister’s national security adviser Jonathan Powell, is facing calls for a police investigation after posting on X that she supports the banned group Palestine Action. The UK government has distanced itself from her remarks, stating she does not represent the government in any capacity. The ban, introduced on 5 July 2025, makes supporting the group a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Helm’s post came in response to author Sally Rooney, whose publisher Faber has stopped selling her books in Britain due to her support for the group. Police have made 3,630 terror-related arrests linked to Palestine Action since the ban, compared to 234 in the previous year.
Why it matters
The case raises serious questions about the national security adviser’s impartiality and the enforcement of the UK’s anti-terrorism laws against public figures. It also highlights the growing legal and social consequences for authors, publishers, and individuals who express support for Palestine Action, even indirectly.
