Nuclear War and Malicious AI Threaten Humanity by 2100, Says Lancet Commission

· World · The Guardian, NDTV

A new global risk assessment by The Lancet Commission on 21st Century Global Threats to Health has identified nuclear conflict and the malicious use of AI as the top threats capable of ending humanity by the year 2100. The commission modelled disability-adjusted life years lost due to sickness, disability, and early deaths across 17 major threats over the next 75 years. The report notes that while the likelihood of nuclear war and AI-driven biological weapons remains low, their potential consequences are catastrophic. Accompanying editorial warnings state that a nuclear conflict could induce a nuclear famine by blocking sunlight with upper-atmosphere particles. Other major catastrophic risks identified include climate breakdown, air pollution, antimicrobial resistance, and childhood malnutrition.

Why it matters

The assessment highlights extreme existential risks that threaten global public health and human survival, emphasizing that leaders must take coordinated action to address these interacting threats.
