Nvidia Backs OpenAI in 20-Year Ohio Datacenter Deal

· Technology · Times of India, Indian Express, Bloomberg

OpenAI has signed a 20-year lease for roughly 8 gigawatts of computing capacity at SB Energy's PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio. Nvidia has agreed to serve as the exclusive supplier of AI compute and provide financial credit support of up to $105 billion for the land, power, and shell of the initial 4.25 IT-gigawatt phase. The chipmaker initially planned to guarantee all 10 gigawatts of OpenAI's commitments, which could have totaled around $250 billion, but trimmed its exposure after the plans spooked investors. SB Energy, the SoftBank-backed developer, will build, own, and operate the site, and is concurrently working with bankers on an initial public offering targeting $5 billion to $7 billion. The campus sits partly on remediated federal land at the decommissioned Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant and is expected to generate 35,000 construction jobs and 2,500 permanent operating roles through 2032.

Why it matters

This massive infrastructure partnership secures multi-gigawatt computing capacity for generative AI development while capping financial exposure for key chip suppliers like Nvidia.
