Odisha Closes Schools as Depression Triggers Heavy Rainfall

Heavy rainfall caused by a depression in the Bay of Bengal has lashed coastal and southern Odisha, prompting the state government to close schools and Anganwadi centres. District administrations in Khurda, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Jagatsinghpur have shuttered schools for the day, while Malkangiri has extended closures until September 24, 2026. The India Meteorological Department reported the depression is currently 220 km from Gopalpur and 320 km from Visakhapatnam, with wind gusts reaching 75 km per hour expected along the coast. Authorities have cancelled leave for government employees in Ganjam, Koraput, and Kalahandi and suspended ferry services in Chilika Lake until September 25. While schools remain closed, the National Rural Talent Scholarship examination will proceed as scheduled.
