Odisha Government Forms Commission To Study SEBC Political Backwardness
· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
The Odisha government has established a commission to evaluate the political representation and backwardness of Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBCs) in local self-government institutions. Led by retired Odisha High Court judge Justice Pramath Patnaik, the panel includes retired IAS officer Bijay Kumar Prusty as a member and Special Secretary Sujata Mishra as the member-secretary. The commission is tasked with analyzing SEBC population data in both rural and urban areas to compare their numerical strength against their current political participation. This study aims to provide a data-backed foundation for potential measures to ensure adequate representation for the SEBC category in local bodies. The initiative comes ahead of the panchayat and urban local body elections scheduled for next year.
Why it matters
The findings could lead to significant changes in reservation policies for local elections, directly impacting political access for SEBC communities across Odisha's rural and urban governance structures.
