Odisha Orders Evacuations as Very Severe Cyclone Nears Andhra Coast

· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times, The Hindu

Odisha has deployed disaster response personnel and ordered evacuations across vulnerable districts as a depression over the Bay of Bengal threatens to intensify into a very severe cyclonic storm. According to the India Meteorological Department, the storm system is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on October 28, 2026, with wind speeds reaching up to 125 kmph and gusts up to 140 kmph. Five Odisha districts bordering Andhra Pradesh — Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Rayagada, and Malkangiri — are under a red warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall starting October 27. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi directed officials to prioritise public safety and evacuations to achieve a zero-casualty objective despite the storm's projected landfall in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. Authorities have also advised fishermen to refrain from venturing into the sea as maritime conditions deteriorate.

Why it matters

The impending cyclone threatens lives, coastal infrastructure, and agricultural crops across southern Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Mass evacuations and emergency preparations aim to minimise property damage and prevent storm-related casualties along the eastern coast.
