Odisha Prepares Airlift Operations for 2,000 Marooned by Cyclone Arnab
· India · The Hindu, Hindustan Times, Indian Express
The Odisha government is preparing to airlift approximately 2,000 people stranded by flash floods in Ganjam and Gajapati districts following the impact of Cyclonic Storm Arnab. Persistent rain and low-hanging clouds have currently hampered aerial rescue efforts, though the Indian Coast Guard remains on standby. State Chief Secretary Anu Garg stated that the administration is prioritizing the evacuation of 100 villagers from the Sanakhemundi, Asika, and Gopalpur areas. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has engaged with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to monitor the situation as the storm weakens. Officials expect water levels to begin receding over the next five to six hours, allowing for scaled-up relief operations.
Why it matters
The ongoing floods have cut off hundreds of villages and towns in Odisha, creating an urgent need for aerial intervention to reach thousands of marooned residents.
