Odisha Rejects Premature Release of Convict Dara Singh
· India · The Hindu, India Today, Indian Express
The Odisha State Sentence Review Board has rejected the premature release of Rabindra Kumar Pal, also known as Dara Singh, who is serving a life sentence for the 1999 murder of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons. The board determined that his release could trigger communal disturbances in the region. Although prison authorities had previously recommended his release based on good behaviour, the board cited a recent assembly of supporters in Kendujhar as a reason for its decision. Singh has served over 26 years in prison for the triple murder case that drew significant international condemnation.
Why it matters
The decision underscores the state's focus on maintaining communal harmony in sensitive criminal cases involving religious violence.
