Odisha Zoo Provides Special Care to Rescued Orangutans Amid Smuggling Concerns

Five baby orangutans, not native to Odisha, were rescued from Balasore district’s forest and brought to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar. Authorities suspect involvement of a global smuggling ring. The animals—three males and two females—are under round-the-clock monitoring in a temperature-controlled quarantine facility, with three keepers and a veterinary team overseeing their health. Two of the youngest orangutans are being fed mashed potatoes and apples, while the others receive bananas, apples, and milk every two hours. Toys and slings have been provided to keep them engaged, and a diet chart was prepared in consultation with Mysore Zoo’s expertise.
