Oil infra hit by Ukraine, Russia gets 70% of its fuel from India

Russia imported a record 172,000 tonnes of oil products in August 2026, with nearly 70%—120,000 tonnes—sourced from India, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA). India’s exports included 120,000 tonnes of gasoline (petrol) worth €78 million, refined from Russian crude at Gujarat’s Vadinar refinery, which is partly owned by Russia’s Rosneft. The gasoline was shipped via ship-to-ship transfers off Egypt to Russia’s Arctic port of Beloe More. Despite being the second-largest importer of Russian crude after China, India’s crude imports fell 24% in August after peaking in prior months. Vadinar’s crude supply from Russia surged to 100% in the first eight months of 2026, up from 81% in 2025, as Russian refineries faced attacks during the Ukraine war.
