Oil Ministry Rejects Karnataka's Charge On E20 Petrol Quality Standards
· Business · Times of India, NDTV, Business Standard
The petroleum ministry rejected Karnataka's allegations of excessive ethanol content in retail petrol, stating that tests across 27 states and Union territories confirmed compliance with quality norms. State-run oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation tested 893 samples, finding ethanol levels within the prescribed 19 to 21 per cent range. The findings included 56 samples from Karnataka that recorded an average ethanol content of 19.30 per cent. The ministry's data contradicts Karnataka's claims that local fuel samples contained between 26 and 31 per cent ethanol. State oil firms questioned Karnataka's sampling methodology and asked for complete documentation to verify the third-party laboratory reports.
Why it matters
The dispute impacts consumer confidence in the nationwide rollout of E20 fuel and raises questions about inter-governmental testing protocols.
