Old-Economy Sectors Drive Asian Markets Beyond AI Boom
· Business · LiveMint, Bloomberg
Asian market returns are increasingly driven by old-economy mainstays such as financials, energy, and industrials alongside the dominant technology sector. While technology accounts for six of Asia's 15 best-performing market sectors in 2026, the remaining nine are anchored in traditional industries. Geopolitical tensions and high energy prices have elevated global defence spending and infrastructure demand, benefiting regional manufacturers. South Korea notably supplied 8.6 percent of European NATO arms imports between 2021 and 2025, outpacing rivals due to Western capacity constraints.
Why it matters
Diversified growth across financials, energy, and defence gives Asian markets resilience against potential slowdowns in the technology sector.
