Olympian Shivpal Singh Handed 10-Year Doping Ban by NADA
· Sports · Times of India, NDTV Sports
Former Asian silver medallist and Tokyo Olympian Shivpal Singh received a 10-year suspension from the National Anti-Doping Agency Disciplinary Panel. The 31-year-old javelin thrower tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid methandienone in what officials classified as his second doping offence. This sanction effectively jeopardizes his competitive career. Singh previously served a ban in 2021 after another out-of-competition test returned positive for a steroid, though that suspension was reduced from four years to one on appeal in January 2023. Several other Indian athletes, including sprinter MV Jilna and heptathlete Swapna Barman, are also facing provisional suspensions for doping violations.
Why it matters
This long-term ban removes a prominent Indian javelin thrower from competition and highlights ongoing anti-doping enforcement issues within Indian athletics.
