Omani Co-Pilot Allegedly Attacks Captain on Flight to Tel Aviv
· World · India Today, Indian Express
Omani co-pilot Hamam al-Hammami allegedly attacked Indian captain Smit Machchhar with an emergency axe on September 30 aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The 29-year-old co-pilot asked for permission to pray before striking the captain from behind in an attempt to seize control of the aircraft carrying over 170 passengers. Despite serious injuries, Captain Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door twice, allowing passengers to overpower the co-pilot and divert the plane to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia. Emirati authorities are seeking the death penalty for al-Hammami in a multinational terrorism investigation. Investigators report that al-Hammami had previously been blacklisted by Oman Air due to radicalisation concerns.
Why it matters
The incident exposes severe aviation security vulnerabilities involving flight deck access and employee vetting, while placing Omani counterterrorism policies under intense international scrutiny.
