· Business · Indian Express, Hindustan Times
More than 22 percent of Indian college students have already started a business, nearly matching the global average of 23 percent, according to the GUESSS India 2025 National Survey Report. Released by IIT Mandi in partnership with REVA University, Bengaluru, the survey covered 25,783 students across 1,200 institutions in 34 states and Union Territories. The findings reveal that 43 percent of Indian students aspire to start a business, while 35.5 percent of those who have launched ventures report regular sales. The share of students wanting to run their own business right after graduation rose from 14 percent in 2023 to 16.2 percent in 2025. Conversely, the desire for government jobs declined from 12.7 percent to 10.1 percent, and interest in large corporate jobs dropped from 31.3 percent to 27.4 percent.
Why it matters
The shift in student ambitions toward entrepreneurship highlights the need for higher education institutions to expand campus incubators, mentorship, and practical business training to support young founders.
