Onion Supply Comfortable Ahead of Festival Season, Says Consumer Affairs Secretary

Onion availability is expected to remain comfortable to meet domestic demand in the coming months, according to Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare. The government has begun a calibrated release of buffer stocks ahead of the festive and wedding seasons. Authorities have started moving buffer-stock onions through railway and road transport, with the first Kanda Express leaving Nashik for New Delhi. Additionally, more than 15 trucks are dispatching onions to over 10 destinations. This intervention has led to a 13% decline in retail onion prices over two days, bringing the all-India average down to ₹37.87 per kg by 26 August.
