A new Niti Aayog paper, titled 'Reimagining Skilling for Viksit Bharat @2047' and published on August 18, reveals that only 8.25% of Indian graduates are employed in roles aligned with their qualifications. The paper, which attributes the figure to the Economic Survey 2024-25, describes India's higher and technical education system as having a 'fundamental disconnect' between what is taught and what the labour market demands. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, speaking to The Indian Express on August 17, said that courses students join and complete 'don't ready you for jobs' and often fail to prepare them for entrepreneurship. The report highlights that curricula remain outdated in many institutions and are not sufficiently aligned with changing industry requirements. New Delhi-based Niti Aayog, the central government's policy think tank, did not provide a specific timeline for reforms in the published paper.
