Software engineer Steven Anderegg allegedly used the open-source AI model Stable Diffusion to generate images of naked children from his home in Wisconsin. Anderegg, who spent nearly two decades as a software engineer, downloaded the generative AI model onto his personal laptop while living with his wife and son. Stable Diffusion emerged as a new tool capable of turning text prompts into realistic images almost instantly upon release. Because the software is open-source, its underlying code was made freely available online for anyone with technical proficiency to run locally. Investigators note that the accessibility of such decentralized AI frameworks has complicated efforts to prevent the creation of illicit digital content.
