OpenAI Begins Watermarking ChatGPT Text in EU to Comply with AI Act
· Technology · TechCrunch
OpenAI is rolling out invisible text watermarking for ChatGPT and Codex users in the European Union to comply with the EU AI Act's transparency rules. The watermark is not a visible symbol, but subtly shapes word choices to leave a machine-detectable pattern that travels with copied text. API developers worldwide can turn on the watermark for select models, though it remains off by default. OpenAI's tests show that editing or replacing 10% of words with synonyms drops detection rates from about 92% to 66%. The company is initially providing detector access only to approved researchers and expert organizations to evaluate reliability.
Why it matters
EU regulatory mandates are forcing major AI labs to build verifiable tracking into generative models, setting a compliance precedent that could expand globally.
