OpenAI has acquired smartphone camera maker Glass Imaging in a deal valued at over $300 million, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Based in Los Altos, California, Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, who previously led the team that developed Apple's Portrait Mode. The startup uses neural networks to improve smartphone image quality from the moment the shutter clicks, rather than relying on post-processing edits. The acquisition aligns with rumors that OpenAI is working on its own hardware devices, including smartphones and AI companions. OpenAI previously acquired designer Jony Ive's device startup io in 2025 for $6.5 billion.
