OpenAI Discovers Sophisticated Recording Device Hidden in San Francisco Office
· Technology · Engadget, ABC News (AU)
Federal prosecutors have charged 35-year-old Saudi national Abdulrahman Alfozan with attempting to record confidential conversations inside OpenAI's San Francisco headquarters. Alfozan, an engineer employed by the company since July 2025, allegedly concealed a DIY recording device behind a TV in an executive conference room on September 30. OpenAI used its own AI models to identify the device and trace its origin before referring the matter to the FBI. Security personnel subsequently discovered Alfozan's wallet, ID, and a second recording device inside a bag he left behind on October 5. OpenAI stated that the employee has been terminated and that there is no indication of unauthorized access to model weights or customer data.
