Law firm Edelson PC has filed 30 new lawsuits against OpenAI on behalf of students, teachers, and staff present during the February 10 mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. The new complaints accuse the company of aiding and abetting the attack, marking a shift from previous claims of negligence. Plaintiffs allege that OpenAI leadership ignored internal warnings about the shooter’s specific interest in planning violence using ChatGPT. While OpenAI deactivated the teenager’s account, she reportedly created a new one shortly after, and the company maintains its actions did not meet the threshold for alerting law enforcement. The lawsuits also name OpenAI Chief Global Affairs Officer Chris Lehane as the executive who instructed staff to stand down from contacting authorities.
