OpenAI Infrastructure Lead Sachin Katti to Step Down and Advise

· Technology · CNBC

OpenAI infrastructure and compute lead Sachin Katti announced his departure after roughly a year at the artificial intelligence company and will continue supporting it as an advisor until November 15. Katti stated on LinkedIn that he decided to move on to build something new after overseeing silicon, systems, data centers, and energy roadmaps. Uday Ruddarraju, who has served as OpenAI's CTO of compute, will replace Katti to lead the overall compute organization. Ruddarraju previously headed infrastructure engineering at Elon Musk's xAI before joining OpenAI in July of last year. Katti's exit marks the latest in a series of executive departures at OpenAI this year as the company pursues massive compute investments.

Why it matters

The leadership change impacts OpenAI's multi-billion-dollar infrastructure and data center expansion strategy as the company targets $600 billion in compute spending by 2030 amid mounting public backlash over energy and water consumption.
