OpenAI launched a specialized version of its chatbot called ChatGPT for Teens, featuring automated restrictions and monitoring for users aged 13 to 17. The model automatically deploys when users register with teen birthdates or are identified as underage through usage patterns. The system includes stricter blocks on content related to self-harm, violence, eating disorders, and graphic sexuality, alongside disabled voice mode and limitations preventing the AI from claiming personal feelings or consciousness. Additional features include Study Mode, which responds with guiding questions rather than direct answers, as well as mandatory break reminders and quiet hours. The rollout follows mounting legal scrutiny, including wrongful death lawsuits alleging that the chatbot drove some users to suicide.
