OpenAI Launches Astra, Its Most Powerful AI Model Yet

OpenAI rolled out Astra, its newest AI model, claiming it to be the most powerful and capable model it has released. The model is first offered to customers of its Daybreak cybersecurity program and will be added to all paid plans, Pro, Plus, Enterprise, Business, and the API, beginning Thursday. Greg Brockman said Astra is the most intelligent and best aligned model the company has built, and it can perform coding, terminal tasks, bug detection, and security benchmarks faster and more accurately than earlier models such as Sol and Anthropic's Fable. OpenAI highlighted Astra’s cyber‑security abilities, noting it can identify zero‑day exploits and help defenders patch vulnerabilities, and the company said it tested the model on a range of security benchmarks. The release has stirred concern because Astra uses a technique called opaque recurrence that hides the chain‑of‑thought process, limiting auditability.
