OpenAI launches ChatGPT ads in India with WPP and Omnicom as first agency partners

· Technology · Economic Times, Gadgets360, Indian Express

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in India on August 27, 2025, placing advertisements in front of logged-in adult users on the free and Go tiers of the chatbot. Subscribers to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education plans will not see ads. WPP and Omnicom are the first two agency partners, with more than 50 brands expected to begin running campaigns in India during the launch week. From September 4, businesses will get self-serve access through ChatGPT Ads Manager, with daily budgets starting at Rs 725. Dave Dugan, Vice President and Head of Global Ads Solutions at OpenAI, called India one of the company's most dynamic markets.

Why it matters

The ad rollout gives Indian brands direct access to ChatGPT's growing user base and lets small businesses advertise starting at just Rs 725 a day, while paid subscribers retain an ad-free experience — a structure that will shape how conversational AI is monetised in one of OpenAI's largest markets.
