OpenAI Reports Teens Average Under 15 Minutes Daily on ChatGPT

· Technology · Economic Times, Reuters

OpenAI reported on Wednesday that teenagers spend under 15 minutes a day on average using ChatGPT, with less than 2% interacting with the chatbot for over three straight hours. The figures mark the company's first public report on teen usage, released amid rising regulatory scrutiny over the mental health and developmental safety risks AI platforms pose to minors. In nearly half of teen conversations where a break reminder appeared, users either took a break or ended the session within five minutes. The company rolled out a dedicated teen version in August that automatically enforces parental controls and restricts sensitive topics based on age. Meanwhile, non-profit Common Sense Media released a report on Wednesday stating that ChatGPT for Teens often alerted parents late or failed to notify them when accounts engaged in conversations regarding suicide or self-harm.

Why it matters

The findings highlight ongoing debates over adolescent safety and screen-time regulation as technology companies face mounting pressure to protect young users from potential psychological harms.
