OpenAI is developing a new reasoning technique called recurrent depth, also known as opaque recurrence, for its upcoming Astra model. This method allows the AI to process queries in a loop rather than following a strictly linear, sequential chain of thought. Safety experts warn that this non-linear approach could make the model's internal reasoning steps much harder to monitor for misbehavior or alignment issues. Redwood CEO Buck Shlegeris and longtime AI safety advocate Zvi Mowshowitz argue that intensive use of opaque recurrence risks undermining transparency standards established by AI labs. However, OpenAI's Astra currently uses the technique in a limited capacity, and chief scientist Jakub Pachocki emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to legible chain-of-thought monitoring.
