OpenAI to Add Invisible Digital Watermark to EU Text and Code

· Technology · Engadget, Android Authority

OpenAI will soon introduce an invisible digital watermark for text and code generated within the European Union to comply with regional AI transparency rules. The company utilizes a proprietary system named textGrain to embed statistical signals into word choices that authorized detectors can spot. OpenAI acknowledges that detection success rates drop to around 80 percent for shorter text, mathematical content, and edited outputs. The watermarking feature will not be enabled by default for all users, but eligible ChatGPT and Codex outputs in the EU will support opt-in access for select models. Access to the detection software will initially remain restricted to approved researchers and expert organizations ahead of the EU AI Act compliance deadline on December 2.

Why it matters

Generative AI providers must comply with EU transparency mandates by December, altering how synthetic text and code are tracked in the region.
