Opera Introduces WebAI Standard to Run AI Models Locally in Browser

· Technology · TechCrunch

Web browser maker Opera has introduced WebAI, a new web standard that allows users to run artificial intelligence models locally inside their browser without relying on cloud servers. The company released the feature as an opt-in preview in its flagship Opera One browser, with plans to bring it to Opera GX and Opera Neon. WebAI supports open-weight AI models such as Google's Gemma and Apple's on-device foundation model for Mac users. The system enables users to perform text generation, content classification, and information analysis directly on their hardware. By eliminating cloud dependencies, the standard keeps user data on the device and allows developers to add AI capabilities without paying per-request infrastructure fees.

Why it matters

Local AI execution prevents personal data from being transmitted to corporate servers and eliminates the need for paid cloud subscriptions. It also allows software developers to integrate AI features into web applications without maintaining expensive backend server infrastructure.
