Opposition Prepares Third Motion to Remove CEC Gyanesh Kumar
· India · Times of India, LiveMint
Opposition parties in New Delhi are preparing to submit fresh notices in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha to move a motion for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This marks the opposition's third attempt to remove the CEC, with the new notices expected to be submitted next week. A previous notice moved by 73 opposition MPs from Rajya Sabha on April 24 remains pending in the upper House. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh stated that opposition MPs will submit new notices to the LS Speaker and RS chairperson if the government holds a special session of Parliament. The proposed notices will incorporate issues raised in a recent report by the Indian Express regarding the special intensive revision of electoral rolls.
Why it matters
Frequent parliamentary challenges against the head of the Election Commission highlight deep political friction between the ruling government and opposition parties over electoral oversight.
