Orissa High Court Orders Review Of Worker’s Regularisation Plea
· India · Indian Express, Hindustan Times
The Orissa High Court has directed the Odisha Higher Education Department to reconsider a laboratory attendant's claim for regularisation after he spent 21 years in contractual service. Justice Murahari Sri Raman set aside the government's 2019 rejection of the plea, describing the long-term uncertainty as a "Sword of Damocles" over the employee. Santosh Kumar Patra, who worked at Shailabala Women’s Autonomous College in Cuttack, had served in various departments since 2005 with an unblemished record. The court ordered the authorities to complete the reconsideration process within three months. The ruling emphasized that the petitioner should not be kept in a state of indefinite employment uncertainty.
Why it matters
The decision provides a potential path for long-term contractual employees to secure permanent status and benefits within the state education system.
