Out Of Jail For 5 Hours, Bangladesh Hindu Monk, In Tears, Touches Idol's Feet
· World · NDTV
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a prominent Hindu monk and spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatan Jagaran Jote, was granted a five-hour release from Chittagong Central Jail. The temporary release allowed him to visit his residence in the city, where he was filmed touching the feet of a religious idol in an emotional state. Das was arrested in November on charges of sedition following a protest in Chittagong that involved the hoisting of a saffron flag above a national flag. His legal team and supporters have maintained that the charges are politically motivated and lack legal merit. The court has not yet set a date for the next hearing in his ongoing sedition case.
Why it matters
The case has become a focal point for concerns regarding the treatment of religious minorities in Bangladesh, drawing significant attention from the Indian government and international human rights observers.
