Over 600,000 without power after Russian strikes hit Ukraine's energy grid

· World · CBS News, Bloomberg

Russian strikes on Sunday left more than 600,000 residents in Dnipropetrovsk region without power and nearly 250,000 customers in Kharkiv region without electricity after a drone hit a critical infrastructure facility. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported widespread outages across the country, including 140 apartment buildings left without heating in Zhytomyr region as temperatures hovered near freezing. The attacks damaged important energy facilities and significantly hampered electricity transmission in Kyiv, officials said. Emergency rescue operations continue in Komyshuvakha village following a previous strike on an aid distribution centre.

Why it matters

The strikes have plunged hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians into darkness and cold during winter, severely disrupting daily life and critical heating in multiple regions already struggling with freezing temperatures.
