Over 800 detained across India as police prevent CEC resignation protests

More than 800 people were detained nationwide on Saturday as police moved to prevent protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. In Mumbai, police detained around 600 supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party supporting a nationwide movement, breaking up human chains and using drones near Nana Chowk to stop protesters from reaching August Kranti Maidan. Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, along with actor Imran Khan, Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai, and CPI leader Prakash Reddy were among those detained. Civil society collective Hum Bharat Ke Log, led by Tushar Gandhi, had planned a demonstration demanding institutional revamping.
