Hariram Gupta, the owner of the five-storey PG building that collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan, was detained by police in Bhiwadi, Rajasthan. The collapse, which occurred on Sunday during ongoing repair work, resulted in the deaths of seven people and left five others injured. Delhi Police had previously issued a lookout circular and obtained Gupta's passport details to prevent him from fleeing the country. Multiple police teams conducted raids at various suspected hideouts before locating him near Gurugram. The building was a popular accommodation for students from nearby institutions, including Motilal Nehru College and Sri Venkateswara College.
Why it matters
The detention marks a significant step in the criminal investigation into the building collapse, which has raised urgent safety concerns regarding student housing in densely populated university areas.
