PAC Criticizes Railways Over Poor Passenger Amenities

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express

The Public Accounts Committee has expressed concern over persistent sanitation and amenity failures across Indian Railways stations. A recent Comptroller and Auditor General audit found that bio-toilets were deficient or non-functional at 491 of the 512 inspected stations. PAC Chairperson K.C. Venugopal noted that the committee has highlighted these same deficiencies in four reports since 2007 without seeing significant improvements. The Ministry of Railways has been directed to review these long-standing observations and submit a formal response within one month.

Why it matters

The findings indicate a systemic failure to maintain basic hygiene and infrastructure for millions of daily rail passengers despite repeated audit warnings.
