Padma Shri Winner Hajabba Gets SIR Notice Over Name Mismatch

· India · Indian Express, NDTV

Harekala Hajabba, a Padma Shri awardee from Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district known for building a school with savings from selling oranges, received a notice on Monday under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Election Commission records from the 2002 voter roll revision list him only as "Hajabba," while his ration card, Aadhaar, passport and current voter ID carry "Harekala Hajabba." He has been asked to submit verification documents by September 11. Hajabba is among 43.81 lakh voters flagged during the claims and objections phase running from August 24 to October 22, ahead of final rolls on October 27. Of the 7.31 lakh notices generated in Karnataka, hearings have been completed in 206 cases.

Why it matters

Even a nationally recognised Padma Shri recipient is not exempt from SIR-driven name verification, signalling how widely the exercise is sweeping the Karnataka voter base before the final electoral roll is published on October 27.
