Pak Army Chief Munir Deploys More Troops to Saudi Arabia
· World · Times of India, Reuters
Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir agreed to quickly deploy additional military assets to Saudi Arabia under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement. The pact was invoked for the first time on Monday in response to increasing Houthi attacks on the Saudi kingdom. The deployment proceeds despite the Pakistani Parliament voting to stay out of the Houthi conflict 11 years ago. The Mecca defence pact builds on a 2025 agreement under which Pakistan had already sent about 8,000 troops to Saudi Arabia by May. Munir holds the rank of field marshal till 2030 with lifetime immunity from criminal prosecution following constitutional changes in 2025.
Why it matters
The troop deployment deepens Pakistan's military entanglement in Middle Eastern conflicts while highlighting the army's dominance over civilian leadership in Islamabad.
