Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir Proposes Splitting Provinces Into Smaller States

· World · India Today, NDTV

Pakistan army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir has proposed breaking up the country's four existing provinces into smaller states to improve administrative efficiency. Under the proposal, large provinces such as Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan could be divided into anywhere from 12 to 15 new provinces or up to 160 smaller territories. Critics argue the restructuring would weaken alternative centers of power and strengthen the military establishment's control. Punjab currently holds over half the national population at approximately 128 million residents, while Balochistan spans the largest area with roughly 15 million people. The military has directly ruled Pakistan for more than two-fifths of its history.

Why it matters

A fundamental restructuring of Pakistan's internal boundaries would concentrate administrative control under the military establishment and reshape the political influence of regional power centers.
