Pakistan Coach Hesson Denies Role in Squad Cull

· Sports · Times of India, India Today

Pakistan interim red-ball coach Mike Hesson has said he had no role in releasing three senior players — Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Ali Agha and Imam-ul-Haq — from the Test squad ahead of the third Test against England at Edgbaston starting September 9. Speaking to media in Birmingham, Hesson said the trio had already been sent home by the Pakistan Cricket Board before he was approached to manage the side. He confirmed, however, that he was involved in releasing the remaining players and selecting replacements. England have already taken an unassailable 2-0 series lead after winning the first Test at Headingley by an innings and 103 runs and the second at Lord's by 194 runs.

Why it matters

The fallout from Pakistan's heavy defeats — including the removal of head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed and bowling coach Umar Gul — leaves the side in transition heading into a dead rubber at Edgbaston, with Hesson now responsible for shaping the Test squad's future direction.
