Pakistan Passes New Law Placing Field Marshal Asim Munir At Center Of Military Command

· World · India Today, Al Jazeera

Pakistan's National Assembly and Senate approved the Defence Forces of Pakistan Act along with amendments to the National Command Authority Act on August 20. The legislation formally establishes a highly centralised military command structure under Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, who serves simultaneously as chief of army staff and chief of defence forces. Appointed as the country's first CDF in December 2025, Munir now acts as the principal military adviser to the prime minister on national security and defense matters. The new law creates a defense forces headquarters under his command to coordinate the army, navy, air force, and strategic operations across multiple domains. For India, the concentration of political influence and operational command in a single military office reduces civilian oversight during potential conflict situations.

Why it matters

The centralization of Pakistan's armed forces under a single military chief alters regional security calculations for India by streamlining Islamabad's crisis decision-making structure.
