Panama Hit by Two Powerful Earthquakes

· World · CBS News, BBC News

Panama was struck by two major earthquakes on Friday, beginning with a 7.7 magnitude tremor near the country's southern tip. A second 6.6 magnitude earthquake occurred approximately two and a half hours later off the Pacific coast. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the first quake was centered near the remote community of Pitaloza Arriba, while the second struck west of Rio Grande. Although the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a warning, it later confirmed the threat had passed. Damage has been reported in the provinces of Veraguas, Herrera, and Los Santos, including a collapsed cathedral in Penonome, though no casualties have been confirmed.

Why it matters

The seismic activity has caused significant infrastructure damage in central Panama, prompting the government to call for calm as rescue teams assess the impact.
