· India · Indian Express, NDTV
Panchkula police have arrested two men allegedly involved in an ATM card-swap racket targeting elderly and less-educated users across Panchkula, Kalka, and adjoining areas. The accused, identified as Manoj Kumar of Hisar and Anil of Bhiwani, were arrested on October 14 following a tip-off about suspicious activity near Sector-20 ATMs. Police recovered 70 ATM cards, a point-of-sale machine, and two mobile phones during the operation. According to investigators, the suspects would approach people offering cash withdrawal assistance, trick them into revealing their PINs, and secretly swap their original cards with similar-looking ones. Both accused have been remanded in police custody for four days as the Cyber Crime Police Station continues its investigation.
Why it matters
The arrests highlight a prevalent financial fraud scheme targeting vulnerable bank customers at ATM kiosks. Bank users are advised to remain vigilant and avoid accepting assistance from strangers during cash transactions.
