Pargat Singh Takes Charge as Punjab Congress President Ahead of 2027 Polls

· India · Indian Express, NDTV

Former India hockey captain and three-time MLA Pargat Singh has assumed office as the president of the Punjab Congress following his appointment on October 2. The leadership change has brought a short-term ceasefire to a public feud between rival factions led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and former state chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. Pargat Singh was chosen as a consensus figure acceptable to both camps under the oversight of AICC general secretary Sachin Pilot. He is set to officially take charge in Chandigarh on October 11 after beginning his tenure with visits to religious sites in Amritsar. The party aims to consolidate its organisation ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for February 2027.

Why it matters

Pargat Singh's appointment is a critical attempt by the Congress high command to unify warring state factions and present a cohesive front for the upcoming 2027 assembly polls.
