Patna High Court Questions Kishore Kumar Biography's National Film Award

· Entertainment · Indian Express, Hindustan Times

The Patna High Court has issued notice to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the National Film Development Corporation over the 70th National Film Award for Best Book on Cinema given to 'Kishore Kumar: The Ultimate Biography'. The court is hearing a petition filed by Patna-based writer Anant Prasad Sinha, who challenges the award on grounds of eligibility violation. Sinha alleges the award committee violated rules requiring the honour to go to the best book on Indian cinema published in any language in India. The award was announced on August 16, 2024, and presented on October 8, 2024, in New Delhi. The court has sought a counter-affidavit from the Union of India and scheduled the next hearing for October 8.

Why it matters

The case affects the credibility of the National Film Awards process and raises concerns about adherence to eligibility criteria for literary honours. Authors and publishers may face uncertainty regarding future award eligibility if guidelines are not uniformly applied.
