Patrick Vieira Named Senegal National Team Coach

· Sports · Sportstar, BBC Sport

Former France midfielder Patrick Vieira has been appointed head coach of the Senegal national football team, according to a statement by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF). Vieira, 50, was born in Dakar and will take over after Pape Thiaw, who left following Senegal's Round of 32 exit at the World Cup. He has coached clubs in England, France and Italy, including Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg and a brief spell at Genoa. Vieira’s first matches will come during the next international window in September 2026, as Senegal prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The FSF said the official presentation dates would be announced later. The appointment follows Senegal’s recent exit and the country’s need to rebuild after its 2021 AFCON triumph.

Why it matters

Senegal now has a coach with World Cup winner experience, which could shape its strategy for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
