Pentagon Deploys Custom ChatGPT and Grok for Military Use
· Technology · TechCrunch
The US Department of Defense has integrated custom versions of OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok into its secure GenAI.mil portal. These tools are tailored for 3 million civilian and military personnel to assist with administrative, logistical, and policy-related tasks while ensuring data security. The department stated that the military versions are exempt from the data collection practices typical of consumer AI products. Currently, 1.7 million unique users have already accessed the portal, which previously offered Google Gemini. The Pentagon's expansion follows a dispute with Anthropic, which was designated a supply-chain risk after refusing to provide unrestricted access to its AI models.
Why it matters
This move allows US military personnel to utilize advanced AI for routine operations without exposing sensitive government data to commercial consumer channels. It also signals a shift in the Pentagon's procurement strategy as it seeks to balance technological efficiency with strict security requirements.
