Perplexity Launches Hybrid Compute for Mac to Enhance Data Privacy

Perplexity has introduced a hybrid compute feature for its Mac application, allowing users to process sensitive data locally on their devices. Co-founder and CEO Aravind Srinivas stated that the update enables the app to orchestrate local models for tasks involving private information like tax returns or medical records. While web searches and planning continue to execute in the cloud, the new system uses a privacy gate to identify and route confidential workloads to the local Mac runtime. The company is also open-sourcing its personally identifiable information (PII) classifier to provide transparency into how the system decides which data remains on-device. This shift leverages Apple Silicon to improve privacy while maintaining the performance of cloud-based frontier models.
