Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has consolidated power at the Pentagon through a rolling purge of senior military leadership. Dan Driscoll, the army secretary, resigned on August 31st after months of clashes with Mr Hegseth over the ouster of numerous senior army officers and the future of the force. Mr Hegseth has dismissed at least 24 flag or general officers since taking office, including General Randy George in April and Chris Donahue two months later. The army currently has no Senate-confirmed chief of staff, secretary, or commander of forces in Europe amid the ongoing war with Iran. Mr Driscoll's departure raises questions about the turmoil within the department and the viability of reforms meant to adapt the army to the age of drones.
